Background[]

"1+1", the first track on the album 4, was premiered and performed live by Beyoncé on American Idol on May 25, 2011. The song was originally penned by Terius "The-Dream" Nash with the intention of including it on one of his own projects, but the song was later given to Beyoncé. The latter, along with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart did additional writing for the song before its release.

While 1+1 was only released as a promotional track, it peaked at number 57 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Critics praised Beyoncé for the simple yet powerful musicality of the ballad.

Music video[]

In late July/early August, Beyoncé filmed several music videos, including 1+1 on August 3, 2011. The video premiered on E! News on August 26, 2011.

Lyrics[]

If I ain't got nothing, I got you

If I ain't got something I don't give a damn

'Cause I got it with you

I don't know much about algebra

But I know one plus one equals two

And it's me and you

Thats all we'll have when the world is through

'Cause baby we ain't got nothing without love

Darlin' you got enough for the both of us

So come on baby, make love to me

When my days look lowp

Pull me in close and don't let me go

Make love to me

So that when the worlds at war, let our love heal us all

Right now baby, make love to me, me, me, me

Oh (oh), make love to me.

Hey! I don't know much about guns but I

I've been shot by you

Hey! And I don't know when I'm gon' die

But I hope that I'm gon' die by you

Hey! And I don't know much about fighting, but I

I know I will fight for you

Hey! Just when I ball up my fist I realize

That I'm laying right next to you

Baby we ain't nothing but love

And darlin' you got enough for the both of us, ooh

Make love to me

When my days look low, pull me in close and don't let me go.

Make love to me

So that when the worlds at war, let our love heal us all

Help me let down my guard, make love to me

Me, me, me, me

Oh (oh) makelove to

Me, me, me, me, me
