Freedom is a song recorded by Beyoncé in collaboration with American rapper Kendrick Lamar for her sixth studio album Lemonade (2016). Written and produced by Beyoncé and Jonny Coffer with additional songwriting from Lamar, Carla Marie Williams and Dean McIntosh and additional production from Just Blaze, "Freedom" was released by Columbia Records and Parkwood Entertainment on September 9, 2016 as the fourth single from the album.
The song samples "Let Me Try", performed by Kaleidoscope and written by Frank Tirado, "Collection Speech/Unidentified Lining Hymn", performed by Reverend R.C. Crenshaw and written by Alan Lomax, and "Stewball", performed by Prisoner "22" at Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman and written by Lomax and John Lomax, Sr., thus, Tirado, Lomax and Lomax, Sr. are credited as songwriters on "Freedom".
The song's music video is part of Beyoncé: Lemonade, the hour-long film released in conjunction with the album. Beyoncé performed the song on The Formation World Tour, which the Super Bowl announcement commercial for included the instrumental to "Freedom", and at the 2016 BET Awards with Kendrick Lamar. The song received a nomination for Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
